Espresso vs Filter Coffee: What's the Difference?
If you're new to specialty coffee, one of the first choices you'll come across is espresso or filter coffee.
Many people assume espresso is stronger and filter coffee is weaker. While that's partly true, the real difference lies in how the coffee is brewed and the kind of experience you're looking for.
What is Espresso?
Espresso is brewed by forcing hot water through finely ground coffee under high pressure. The result is a small, concentrated shot with a rich body, intense flavour, and a golden layer of crema on top.
It's the foundation of drinks like:
• Cappuccino
• Latte
• Flat White
• Americano
• Cortado
Espresso is bold, syrupy, and full-bodied. It delivers a lot of flavour in a small cup.
What is Filter Coffee?
Filter coffee is brewed by allowing hot water to slowly pass through coffee grounds using gravity.
Methods like the V60, AeroPress, Chemex, French Press, and Moka Pot all fall under the broader category of manual brewing, although each produces a slightly different cup.
Because the extraction is slower and gentler, filter coffee often tastes cleaner and more expressive. It's easier to notice the coffee's natural sweetness, acidity, and delicate flavour notes.
Which Has More Caffeine?
Surprisingly, an espresso shot contains more caffeine per millilitre, but a full cup of filter
coffee usually contains more caffeine overall because you're drinking a much larger serving.
So if you're looking for the biggest caffeine hit, filter coffee often wins.
Which One Tastes Better?
Neither.
They're simply different.
Espresso emphasizes body, texture, and intensity.
Filter coffee highlights clarity, sweetness, and the unique character of the coffee's origin.
The same coffee beans can taste remarkably different when brewed as espresso versus filter.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose espresso if you enjoy:
• Rich, concentrated coffee
• Milk-based drinks like cappuccinos and lattes
• A quick, intense cup
Choose filter coffee if you enjoy:
• Black coffee
• Exploring different flavour notes
• A slower, more mindful brewing ritual
There Isn't a Right Answer
At Nowhere, we don't believe one brewing method is better than another.
Some mornings call for a bold espresso.
Others deserve the quiet ritual of a slow filter brew.
The best coffee isn't determined by the method.
It's the one you enjoy drinking.
